Seminar with Yamashiro Kenichi in Belgium

When I started doing Okinawa Kobudo in summer 2014 while I was at the Hombo Dojo for a Chi Ryu seminar I couldn’t imagine to ever make progress in Kobudo. Together with a friend of mine I was studying the inspirational teachings of Sensei Kathrin who later sent videos to us showing herself doing the Bo Hojo Undos so we could try to improve back home. Three months later I got an e-mail with a personal invitation to a seminar with Yamashiro Kenichi Sensei at the Hombo Dojo in December. After a few struggles my decision was certain – I would participate. Since then I was crazily looking forward to participating in the seminar.

When I arrived at the Hombo Dojo the mood was great. We exchanged gifts, shaked hands and had a lot of fun sitting together joking. Even at this point I didn’t really realize what an extraordinary opportunity I was about to experience. The first day of training I myself was worried – worried about if I would be able to catch up with the others at least a little bit. Luckily Sensei Yamashiro was able to make me overcome my worries very quickly thanks to his warm and friendly style of teaching without feeling the pressure of competition at all. Sensei Yamashiro saw our group as a whole to make us grow all together and, as far as possible, equally. The training consisted of Sensei Yamashiro overwhelming us with his knowledge and his gifts in the form of Katas and of us doing our very best and helping each other. The whole seminar was dominated by a friendly, familiar and happy mood which Yamashiro Sensei and his interpreter Nakayama-San (or Miyagi Sensei as we lovingly called him) both attributed largely to.

In fact this seminar was my best martial arts experience so far (I’m doing martial arts for nearly 14 years now). I made many new good friends from different countries, was spellbound by the martial art of Kobudo as well as by Yamashiro Sensei himself and last but not least had the best time of my life especially celebrating New Year’s Eve with great people.

My deepest gratitude for having had the opportunity to experience this goes to Sensei Kathrin who really inspired me.
