Report from Okinawa #6

Entrance of the Budokan
Even at Easter Friday our students kept training on Okinawa!
Yannick, our reporter from Naha 😉 , wrote some news today… This morning Sensei Yogi picked him up in order to bring all Bo’s by car to the Budokan (the dojo where they have been training for the last days). The days before they have been training at the 3rd floor of the Budokan which is completely filled with Tatami. However today, they were able to switch onto the 2nd floor which is suited with a wooden floor. This is most effective for their Kobudo training.

The Budokan
First floor – reception, room for fitness training, small supermarket, small dojo,
connection to the helmet (having the shape of a helmet of an ancient samurai)
Second floor – large dojo with wooden floor
Third floor – large dojo with Tatami

They started todays session with a stretching by Sensei Gakiya who used the Bo for this purpose. After this they went on with practicing Hojo undo dai ichi, ni and san as well as the Kumibo (Hojo undo with a partner) for all three series. Then Sensei Gakiya switched their focus on Tunkwa techniques. After having practiced the basic Tunkwa techniques (Tunkwa waza) the students went on with practicing the Kata Tunkwa dai ichi. Last but not least Sensei Gakiya showed complex techniques where the students had to use a Bo against a pair of Tunkwa. Of course all had to make their front rolling on the wooden floor which seems to be a “special technique” of Sensei Gakiya. 🙂

After having their lunch at the Minshuku the whole group went back to the Budokan to practice Chi Ryu Aiki-Jitsu with Shihan Jhonny Bernaschewice. Todays topic was the programme for the Brown Belt (1. Kyu) which consists of 20 complex techniques in 2 series. Shihan Bernaschewice paid a lot of attention on throwing as it is basic for any other complex technique. Therefore, the students had to practice the Shiho nage, Koshi guruma, O uchi gari, Tai Otoshi, Yoko tomoe nage as well as other throwing techniques.
Having finished this lesson everyone was looking forward to have dinner at Sharkeys, a pizzeria. Besides the training this was todays highlight because it was “all you can eat” time!!! And you know what, you deserved it after the exhausting lessons!
Stay tuned for more reports …
